ARC: Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser

I received an ARC of this book through Bloomsbury and GoodReads giveaways in return for an honest review.

Song of the Current is the YA fantasy debut of Sarah Tolcser. It focuses on Caro, a girl who has spent her whole life waiting for the god of the river to speak to her. When her Pa is arrested she agrees to take on a mission in return for her Pa's release but it turns out the neither the package or the mission is as simple as it should be.

What I Liked

This book was seriously amazing, I only had a short time to read it before it was out and I didn't want to put it down. Song of the Current features some amazing world building and you find yourself fully entranced with the world and its gods. I might not be sure how to pronounce everything but I can picture it.

As well as the excellent world, there's a wonderful main character. Where a lot of other books, even good ones, go down the I'm not like other girls route, this book acknowledges that problem. Caro was raised on a boat and where's trousers for practical reasons but she gets mad when Markos assumes she can't be feminine. There's also a moment early on that would have probably left to insta-romance in most books but in this one? She slaps him and pours water over him, pissed he would just assume and not interested because she barely knows him. As well as that all the girls in this book are kickass in different ways and I love that. I also love all the different relationships in this book. The friendships, the familial relationships and of course the romance. Once Markos stopped being so pompous, he was such a respectful love interest and that just makes me so happy.

The plot was, of course, fascinating but I feel like if I start rambling about it I'll give so much away. But it really was good and I'm so excited for book 2.

What I Didn't Like

My only issue is that the final battle could have been a little longer. I wasn't disappointed by it but the way it suddenly ended did feel a little short. Especially as it pretty much went straight into more of the god stuff after which was interesting, but kinda not what you expect when you still have like...40 pages to go.

Other than that, I really can't think of any other issues. I've seen other people say that they found the writing a little clunky at times but I didn't find that at all. However, those people also said the story made up for it so it possibly doesn't matter.

I'm so happy to have this pretty little ARC in my hands. It looks so gorgeous and it's such a good book. The moment it's out, you guys need to go out and get it. Trust me on that.

5/5 Stars
